Treat Your Mum to a Special Day Out on Mother’s Day With Activities at the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre
Go the extra mile for your mum this Mother’s Day by celebrating with fun activities at the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre, such as The Foundry, where you can unleash your creativity with your mum by learning how to craft personalised pewter accessories using moulds or freehand techniques in a session.
Priced at RM180 per person, the session provides an hour of fun where visitors can learn more about pewter craftsmanship and take home three of these wearable handmade keepsakes as keychains and pendants. However, it is only available for adults and children ages 15 and above.
Our experience
We were recently invited to experience this ourselves, and we had to say that it was plenty of fun! As we were brought into The Foundry, we were given a quick briefing on pewter and how it can be made into various accessories and decorative items.
Our guide explained that pewter is versatile, malleable, long-lasting, easy to clean, and maintain. According to the Royal Selangor website, their high-quality cast pewter consists of 92% to 97% tin, the highest international standard, with a small proportion of copper and antimony added to strengthen the alloy.
He then demonstrated the magical qualities of pewter and how it can be easily shaped into a bracelet, a paperweight, and a bookend.
The Foundry featured several rounded tables with molten pewter in the middle of each. As we gathered around our respective tables, we were reminded to wear gloves and an apron, both provided.

We then grabbed our tools and moulds, which were provided, and started getting to work on experimenting with the magical substance. Personally, it is much more complicated than it initially looked to get the exact shape you wanted. But after a couple of takes, we quickly got the hang of it and started experimenting with crazy designs and shapes.
If you’re looking for a limited edition design, in addition to several thematic moulds available, Royal Selangor recently introduced a new mould at The Foundry in conjunction with its 20th-anniversary celebration. The mould features the Visitor Centre's 20th-anniversary logo on its reverse, making it a memorable keepsake for this significant milestone.

Once you’ve completed your three designs, you will then scotch and buff to make sure that it’s all smooth and shiny before passing your designs over to the experts to finish up your designs and turn them into a pendant, bracelet, keychain, and more.
We managed to create his and hers bracelets from scratch and a keychain from a mould. As someone not particularly artistic, I’d say I didn’t do as badly as I thought!

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed the experience as there was a lot of freedom to work on our creative juices so we'd highly recommend partaking in a fun activity like this with your mum!
