UPDATED [2.57pm]:

For five hours, Malaysians celebrated Shweta Sekhon's achievement, after it was announced that Malaysia had won the 'Miss Universe 2019 Best National Costume’ award.

The gorgeous dress, named 'A Peranakan Indulgence', was designed by local designer Carven Ong.

But it seems that our win didn't last long as sadly, history has repeated itself.

Boy, Steve is not very good at his job,
Initially, Steve Harvey had announced that the Philippines had won the Best National Costume, but as Shweta was standing next to him at the time, confusion ensued.

Shweta also corrected Harvey by saying, “It’s not Philippines. It’s Malaysia”. Harvey defended himself, saying that he was just reading from the teleprompter and vented his frustation over the error.

A short moment after that, Miss Universe also tweeted out a congratulatory message, making it official that Malaysia had won.

We officially won... for five hours.
While some Malaysians are still over the moon over the win, it seems that the beauty pageant organiser has tweeted out a new update regarding the official winner for the award.

It turns out, the 'Family Feud' host was right all along - it was the Philippines.

It's definitely a sad new for us Malaysians, but we have to accept it and move on. We hope they'll issue an official apology to us.

The win would've been a historical one for Malaysia as it would be the first time the country has won the National Costume category in the 68 years of the pageant.

According to Business Insider, a source close to the Miss Universe Organisation told the portal that Sekhon was being featured in the broadcast so that viewers could find out more about her elaborate costume, but she was not aware that Ganados’ name would be called first – prompting the confusion.

Regardless of the outcome, we're proud of Shweta and Carven Ong. Congratulations!
