We Grilled Douglas Lim with a Series of Malaysian-Related Questions and Here’s What Went Down
Ahh Malaysia, the land of nasi lemak, teh tarik, and 24-hour local food joints. We take pride in our multi-cultural society and the ability to mix and match the myriad of palatable food choices we have according to our taste buds. We could have roti canai and rendang, while sipping on a nice hot cup of Chinese tea. Besides food, our aptitude for mixing languages seamlessly into one sentence should be commended. Where else in the world can you say “Bhaiya, kasi tapau nasi lemak satu” and it would actually make sense?
In conjunction with the upcoming Malaysia Day on this September 16th, let us ask you, do you think you know what makes a person a quintessentially Malaysian? Well just recently, Douglas Lim gave us all the answers to what makes Malaysians so unique and lovable through his show, 10 Things We Love About Malaysians that premiered on HISTORY (Astro ch 555 & 575). The one-hour special featured linguist expert – Dr. Alistair King, social anthropologist, Datuk Dr. Shamsul Amri as well as Douglas’ celebrity friends, Harith Iskander and Reshmonu.
The show explored subjects that we Malaysians hold dearly to such as our legendary Malaysian timing, Malaysian gestures a.k.a the hand sign, and our beloved lepak place, mamak. Place any Malaysian in any part of this world, and you’d bound to experience our ever ‘professional’ Malaysian timing. Be it “on the way” (but you’re actually at home) or “another 5 minutes”, we just can’t help it but to be late. This may not apply to all of us, be we’re pretty certain everyone has experienced it at some point in their lives.
So, what other qualities do you think makes us a Malaysian? Please share it with us in the comment section below!
