In a TikTok video, a Malaysian pharmacist issued a PSA for female matcha fans. According to him, overconsumption of matcha could disrupt progesterone and estrogen levels.

“One cup of matcha may contain around 70mg of caffeine. Some of the effects of consuming too much matcha include disruptions to the menstrual cycle,” he said.

Additionally, excessive matcha intake may worsen PMS symptoms such as cramps and mood swings, especially during menstruation.

Despite these effects, the pharmacist emphasised that matcha can still be enjoyed in moderation. He advised those experiencing irregular periods to take a break from matcha for one to two weeks to observe how their body responds.

Netizens reacted with shock

In the comments section, many social media users expressed surprise at the revelation. Others shared their personal experiences with matcha overconsumption.

“I didn't get my period last month, and that was also when I drank about three cups of matcha every week. I think I had one to three cups daily. My period didn’t come at all that month, so now I’m slowly cutting back."
