The national costume segment in the annual Miss Universe pageant is something we look forward to with great expectancy. This year will be no different, if the get-up planned for Kiran Jassal, winner of the Miss Universe Malaysia 2016 title, is any indication.

Designed by local fashion dynamo Rizman Ruzaini, Jassal is slated to wear the distinctive costume at the 65th Miss Universe pageant in the Philippines on January 30, 2017. A certified jaw-dropper, the outfit looks like a sexy, glittery sheer mesh bodysuit with the most noticeable feature being the KL Twin Towers, which explode from the shoulders.

The revolutionary jumpsuit, worn with knee-high boots, accompanies the evening gown, an embellished body-hugging number with a mermaid silhouette. “This is a huge risk but a worthy one,” said Miss Universe Malaysia Organisation national director Elaine Daly about the costume and gown.

The silver and nude coloured piece wraps Kiran in more than 100,000 hand-sewn Swarovski crystals. There are tower-shaped laser-cut metal shoulder panels pointing skywards with a crystal-encrusted choker symbolising the sky-bridge between the actual towers.

All this is embellished with geometric designs demonstrating the country’s traditional basket weaving craft. This definitely brings to mind Miss Universe Thailand 2015 Aniporn Chalermburanawong’s rather peculiar tribute to her country dressed as a tuk-tuk during last year’s pageant.

With the motto “You can’t score without goals”, Kiran is all geared up to represent Malaysia in the finale.
