Blockout 2024: Here’s All You Need to Know About the Digital Movement & Which Celebrities Are Being Targeted
Apart from all the outrageous looks that emerged from the 2024 Met Gala, the extravagant spectacle has also brought about a global movement, namely Blockout 2024. Calls for the "Blockout" started after the Met Gala, which took place on the same day that Israel launched its assault on the southern Gaza city of Rafah, which Israel had previously declared a safe zone.
The social media movement calls for the blocking of celebrities who have not publicly supported Palestine in light of the current crisis in Gaza and came about after users on TikTok compared the Met Gala to the popular dystopian film franchise, The Hunger Games.
One such video posted clips from the Met Gala compared to footage of people in Gaza, titling the video 'same planet, different worlds.'

The movement led to social media users banding together to post lists of celebrities to block for not showing support for Palestine.
What is it, and what is its purpose?
The movement aims to spark a mass unfollowing and blocking of famous people and their companies, hoping to prevent their ads from reaching those participating in the Blockout 2024 movement.
With enough people boycotting celebs and their products, the goal is to potentially affect their ad revenue, business sales, engagement, and more.
In a video that has gone viral, a TikToker said, "It’s time to block all the celebrities, influencers, and wealthy socialites who are not using their resources to help those in dire need."
"We gave them their platforms. It’s time to take it back, take our views away, our likes, our comments, our money."

Who’s being targeted?
Various lists have been shared all over social media, but there doesn’t seem to be a conclusive list, as certain celebrities have gone on to show their support for Palestine.
However, the movement is targeting some of the biggest names in the world, including Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Kim Kardashian, Selena Gomez, Zendaya, Drake, Justin Bieber, and many others.
Although it is debatable whether the movement will likely affect celebrities, some of its impact has already been spotted. For example, Kim Kardashian had allegedly lost 3 million followers on social media since "Operation Blockout" began.
Meanwhile, it has also been reported that certain celebrities, such as Lizzo, have recently become more vocal about their support of the Palestinian cause out of fear of being named in the list.

Has it spread to Malaysia?
On the local front, the movement seems to have picked up pace as Malaysian social media users have been sharing lists of local celebrities who have not been vocal enough about the Gaza conflict or are ambassadors of alleged Zionist-linked brands.
In fact, an Instagram page that has been gaining followers has been set up to inform Malaysians about which celebrities are complicit and which ones are not.
Some of the celebrities in the posts include Ayda Jebat, Luqman Podolski, Amelia Henderson, and many others.
