Muhyiddin Yassin has resigned as the Prime Minister of Malaysia.

The embattled 74-year-old announced his decision via a special press conference.

The announcement came after Muhyiddin had an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah on Monday (16 August) morning.

Lost support of majority

Over the past few weeks, Muhyiddin's political career has been standing on shaky grounds as he reportedly lost the support of the majority, The Edge Markets reported.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof told Malaysiakini on Sunday (15 August) that Muhyiddin had informed members of his political party of his decision to resign after using up all other options to sustain the government.

Muhyiddin had earlier tried to woo the Opposition into lending him support on the vote of confidence during a press conference on Friday (13 August), but the offer was reportedly rejected unanimously.

MOSTI minister Khairy Jamaluddin has confirmed the resignation of the cabinet on his Instagram story and several news outlets have also confirmed the end of Muhyiddin's rule.
