The holy month of Ramadhan is upon us and naturally, dates are one of the must-eat items to break fast. You can almost hear the whisper of the Yusuffff Taiyoooooob advertisements. Lately, the combination of dates with a chunk of butter has been going viral on social media.
They first went viral when former Federal Territories Mufti Datuk Seri Dr Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri shared a post on Maktabah Al-Bakri's Facebook page.
He claimed that dried dates and butter were a favourite food of the Prophet Muhammad SAW.
This simple yet tasty combination quickly gained traction online, with many other online users also trying it out for themselves.
However, according to a Facebook post by Public Health Malaysia, dates with butter should be consumed in moderation.
Dates contain nutrients and important minerals and fibre but when butter is added to it, it brings more harm than good.
This is because the animal fats in butter contain saturated fat and trans fat. This increases the risk of heart disease and increases the levels of bad cholesterol.
It is also high in calories and may cause you to put on weight. According to the page, one piece of date and butter was equivalent to one spoonful of rice. While occasional consumption for taste is acceptable, frequent and excessive intake is not recommended for health.
As with everything, do it in moderation and don’t eat it every day! Happy fasting to all Muslims!
