A month ago, we carried a news about the frustrations of those living in a high traffic and congested area like Petaling Jaya when it comes to finding a proper parking space and what exactly they can do about it. You can read our report here.

The news came after the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) made headlines following the news that parking bays rented to business operators must be opened to the public after 6.30pm.

The news however, had people wondering if such rules applies to Kuala Lumpur, as the city is as equally, if not more, congested than Petaling Jaya.

Fret not, we’ve got you covered.

Rojak Daily spoke to Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) corporate planning department director Khairul Azmir Ahmad regarding the matter to clear the air about it.

So, does the same rule apply in KL?

Khairul Azmir said according to DBKL procedure, all this while rented car parks can only be utilised by tenants between 7.30 am to 6.00 pm, from Mondays to Saturdays.

On Sundays and public holidays, the rented parking lots are free to be used by the public.

However, all that changed last month.

“DBKL has revised the procedure. Beginning October 2018, tenants of the rented car parks were allowed to use the parking lots until 10pm or until their operating hours end.

“This include weekends and public holidays,” he said.

The one with the red squares

Khairul Azmir reminded the public that the parking lots rented out by DBKL has poles with the DBKL logo or have the squares simply painted in red.

“The parking bays without the red squares or DBKL logos can be used freely by the public,” he said.

Khairul Azmir, however, cautioned that there are irresponsible parties which uses cones, chairs or tyres to mark and block certain parking lots.

“The use of these materials is not allowed and is considered to operate without permission. If the premise owners hesitate to unblock the parking bays during the stipulated period, DBKL can take action on them including not allowing them to rent the parking bays again.

“Members of the public who encounters such problems or have information regarding such parking lots, can contact DBKL One Stop Call Center at 1-800-88-3255 for further action,” he added.
