Chong Wei Proves He’s King With 6th Japan Open Title

Malaysian world No.1 shuttler, Datuk Lee Chong Wei blazed his way through the Japan Open finals yesterday after beating Denmark’s Jan O Jorgensen in an exciting 70-minute finals. The three-time Olympic silver medalist clinched his 6^th win in this tournament and hopes that no one will ever break his record.

“I am so proud to win my sixth Japan Open title. I cherish this record and I hope no one will break it,” Chong Wei told The Star.

The shuttler admitted that he had seen Jorgensen’s match against Son Wan-ho of South Korea in the semi-finals and knew he was on-form. He commended the Danish badminton player’s performance but was determined to win especially after winning every single match against him for the past seven years. This was his 18^th meeting with the Dane. Chong Wei won his way through with a score of 21-18, 15-21, 21-16. He had previously won the title in 2014, 2013, 2012, 2010 and 2007.

Chong Wei will skip the Korean Open this Wednesday to concentrate on the French and Denmark Open Superseries in October.

“Many top players took a rest after the Olympic Games (in Rio de Janeiro in August), but I obliged my sponsor Yonex’s request to play in Japan. Now, I need a rest before playing in Denmark and France,” said Chong Wei.
