Talk has come up multiple times on possibilities that the airline will be shuttered soon.
In a report released recently, Khazanah Nasional's MD Shahril Ridza Ridzuan was even quoted as saying that low-cost carrier Firefly could take over Malaysia Airlines as Malaysia's national carrier.
Speaking to Berita Harian, Shahril said that shutting down Malaysia Airlines could be an option especially if lessors did not agree to steep discounts.
Firefly to take over?
“If Khazanah continues to finance Malaysia Airlines which does not have a strong financial position and often suffers losses, Khazanah will have to dispose of its holdings in other strategic assets or increase debt,” said Shahril.
As for Firefly taking over, a report by Reuters said that they had seen letters discussing this option sent by the Malaysian Aviation Group (MAG) to lessors.
Firefly is a fully owned subsidiary of MAG and Khazanah is MAG's sole shareholder.
Well, I guess we will all just have to wait and see.
Hopefully, there is some way to save our beloved national carrier.
