Did Jeff Ooi Tweet it?
Dr. Haron Din passed away in the United States on 16th September 2016 and was laid to rest in a cemetery in California.
On the other side of the world, a Jelutong MP and two netizens are being investigated over insenstive social media postings regarding the death of the spiritual leader of PAS. The latter two were arrested for Facebook posts that "insult Islam" said IGP Khalid Abu Bakar in a tweet. The duo were nabbed in Shah Alam and Ipoh.
Their individual words are not known at this point but what is known is Jelutong MP Jeff Ooi's tweet which reads:
"Adios Haron Din. Let there be peace."
He has since deleted the tweet and offered no apology for it. When asked why he deleted the tweet, we have this excerpt from Malaysiakini.com:"...Ooi responded that the words 'Adios Haron Din. Let there be peace', was actually tweeted in his retweet of another user's post, also related to Haron's passing."
"'The Twitter user, an ex-journalist, informed me that he had shut down his Twitter and asked me to un-tweet him. I obliged, though I didn't endorse or oppose his tweet,' Ooi said, thereby removing his own entry attached to the re-tweet."
We don't understand a word of that, but it sounds something along the lines of Shaggy's "It Wasn't Me". DAP has since distanced themselves from Ooi's tweet and Lim Guan Eng has stated in Malaysiakini.com that:"DAP regrets the insensitive statement from Jelutong parliamentarian Jeff Ooi with regards to Haron's passing yesterday. I would like to announce that the re-tweet has been deleted."
"I would also like to express regret if any of Haron's family members felt slighted over Ooi's re-tweet which does not represent the party's stand."
The Sundaily.my reports that the unapologetic Jeff says, "Show me what offence have I committed on my Twitter statement and under which law." Asserting that adios simply means goodbye in Spanish and not what most people understand to be derisive – based on the fact that we've been conditioned by Hollywood and its use of the word adios in an infinte amount of westerns, case in point: Adios Amigo.FreeMalaysiaToday.com reported today that the IGP has called on Jeff Ooi to give a statement and for him to report in now instead of being hauled in for questioning later. We'll have to wait and see if it's adios to the MP's political career. So did he tweet it? Yes. Are reports of his Twitter account being hacked real? No. Was it a good idea?
