eSports will officially be a medal sport in the next installment of the SEA Games, happening next year in the Philippines.

According to ESPN Philippines, the new sporting category will be accredited by the Asian Electronic Sports Federation, and six gold medals will be up for grabs on three platforms — two each for console, mobile and PC.

One of the categories contested will be 'Mobile Legends: Bang Bang' while others will be finalised by 15 December.

eSports Malaysia secretary-general Rinie Ramli is elated that eSports is finally getting recognised at a distinguished sporting event like the SEA Games.

“We will hold a national league next year, which will also be the selection process for the SEA Games 2019 eSports squad,” Rinie told The Star.

We can’t wait to see what other categories will be contested and who will make the cut in representing Malaysia.

Here’s to a brighter future for eSports. Malaysia boleh!
