The F1 Malaysian Grand Prix has been an annual staple for local motorsport fans since 1999, until the previous Barisan Nasional-led government decided to cancel it in 2017, citing low returns and dwindling viewership.
Now that a new political party is in power, the million dollar question is this: could we see a return of the Malaysian F1 Grand Prix?
The answer is yes.
Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad told Malay Mail Online that the government is seriously considering bringing back the race to Malaysia.
He told the website that the interest in F1 races is still very big among local fans and that interest has simulated many Malaysians to dabble in the automotive industry.
If the government decides to host the Malaysian Grand Prix again, Dr M is confident that it would be able to attract the crowd, just like the good old days.
“We will be able to get spectators, more than 100,000 people and that will be worthwhile for us.
"Besides, when we have the Grand Prix, the television stations will broadcast this all over the world, bringing about 200 million viewers,” he was quoted as saying.
However, despite the government's strong interest in re-organising the Malaysian Grand Prix, don't hold your breath just yet.
Dr M said there are no concrete plans yet on when the race will be making a comeback; it could be "next year or the year after".
We really hope it's next year, because we absolutely can't wait to be back in the stands, covering our ears, screaming at our friends over the sound of the engines and see the cars zip by in a split second.
