Slowly but surely, certain sectors in Malaysia are reopening for business for fully vaccinated Malaysians, beginning with the reopening of Pulau Langkawi:

Now, we can expect to catch movies in cinemas again.

The show must go on

On Wednesday (7 September), Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced that cinemas around the country are allowed to reopen again, The Star reported.

However, when the cinemas open their doors again on Thursday (9 September), only those who have completed two doses of their vaccination can be allowed in.

Ismail Sabri also said that cinemas halls could only operate at 50 per cent audience capacity.

Of course, the standard operating procedures (SOPs) -- social distancing, wear face masks at all times, no hanky-panky business while in the cinema, etc. -- also apply.

The decision to reopen cinemas was part of the government's decision to relax the SOPs for the creative industry, for states currently categorised under Phase 1 of the National Recovery Plan (NRP).

"This relaxation will also benefit more than 19,000 companies in the creative sector," he said in a statement quoted by the news portal.

This is definitely good news for cinema operators, who were forced to close for more than a year since the first movement control order (MCO) came into effect in March 2020.

Cinemas, Malaysians excited!

The decision to reopen the cinemas was well received by local cinema operators.

TGV Cinemas welcomed moviegoers back with a simple 'We're back!' post on Facebook:

GSC also posted a similar update on their Facebook page, albeit slightly more cheeky:

As for Malaysians, well, you can imagine how excited they must be to finally be able to catch some of 2021's biggest blockbusters on the big screen:

Will you guys be going back to the cinemas when it reopens on Thursday?
