An Australian dog has been awarded a special medal by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) at the House of Lords recently for saving 100 koalas during Australia's Black Summer bushfires.

According to a report in Daily Mail, Bear is the only dog in the world trained to sniff out both koala fur and faeces.

Special skills that saves lives

His skills include dropping silently to the ground at the base of a tree when he detects their smell as well as helping his team to find koalas that may need medical treatment.

“He's been such a good boy in helping us find and rescue a lot of koalas, especially during the bushfires, but he works throughout the year to help us in our job to make a better and safer place for koalas,” said Bear’s proud handler Romane Cristescu adding that he will receive extra pats and play time for his award.

Bear is a rescue dog that was abandoned by his owner due to his Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

While the original owner didn't know how to handle him, Bear was the perfect candidate for University of the Sunshine Coast's Detection Dogs for Conservation programme, where he underwent his training that helped koalas that were trapped in bushfire.

That’s a good boy!
