Govt To Decide Whether Fully-Vaccinated Malaysians Need Booster Shots By End Of The Month

Lately, we have been reading a lot about the need to administer booster shots following the completion of two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

With the escalating Delta variant infections in the country, Malaysia is currently studying the need for booster shots.

Booster shots necessary?

Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin told New Straits Times that an expert committee has been set up to assess the need for the booster shot.

According to Khairy, the committee will also look at whether the booster shots would be heterologous (mix and match) or homologous (the same vaccine).

The committee’s recommendation is expected by the end of this month.

The government is currently studying the need.
Despite placing a little more focus on the booster shots, Khairy stressed that the priority now is to administer the vaccine to those who have not even received their first shots.

"Only 46 per cent of Malaysians have been fully inoculated as of 31 August, with states including Sabah and Perak falling behind on coverage. More vaccines will be sent their way," he was quoted by the news portal as saying.

Malaysia is not the only country that is studying the need for booster shots.

The report said that our neighbour Singapore is also looking at the need of administering booster shots for selected segments of its population, while Indonesia is already rolling out booster shots for its health care workers.

With the virus still pretty much at large, we definitely do not mind getting another extra dose of vaccine.
