But a recent revelation about hazardous substances being found in some of our favourite biscuits had Malaysians worried.

Authorities are looking into the claims

As such, the Ministry of Health will start probing into the findings revealed by the Hong Kong Consumer Council, which alleged that cancer-causing substances were detected in biscuits and crackers, including those produced by the country.

According to a report by Bloomberg, the council said 60 samples of pre-packed biscuits and crackers they tested contained cancer-inducing elements, such as glycidol or acrylamide.

On top of that, the group also found that 40 per cent of the products analysed had misleading nutrition labels, as their tests revealed that some of the food items were high in fat, sugar or salt.

The Health Ministry’s Food Safety and Quality Division said in a statement that the factory premises of Hup Seng are in regulation with the law, as they possess the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) as well as other Health Ministry certificates.

The statement also said the division of the Health Ministry will be conducting a verification on the company's premises.

Meanwhile, Hup Seng, said in a statement that its "special cream crackers manufactured and marketed in Malaysia are fit for human consumption and are in compliance with the local regulations, quality standards and food safety standards."

The company also said that it would cooperate with authorities in the investigation.

Let's hope nothing serious comes out of this.
