The internet was abuzz with the news of the arrest of M.Sugu, who was a part of the SuguPavithra YouTube channel which had captured the interest of many Malaysians.
It sounded like the kind of success story that not only warmed hearts, but also gave hope to many of a better future.
Unfortunately all was not well.
Sugu, 29, was arrested a few days ago for allegedly hitting his wife, Pavithra, and for carrying a grass-cutting sickle, when the incident happened at the Hospital Raja Permaisuri in Ipoh.
He was believed to have been drunk during the incident.
On 24 July, he was charged under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act, The Star reported.
If convicted, Sugu is facing imprisonment of no less than five years and no more than 10 years and whipping.
The day after the incident on 21 July, Pavithra, who initially made a police report against her husband, retracted her report, which is probably why Sugu is only being charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and not for causing harm.
Sessions Court judge Mohd Fauzi Mohd Nasir imposed a bail of RM10,000 with a surety, and set 17 Aug for the next mention for the case.
It is believed that Pavithra will be paying for the bail.
As for the cause of the fight, it is believed that issues between the couple escalated when Pavithra was named 'Ipoh Icon' by the state government, an award given exclusively for those born in Ipoh.
Sugu's name was not a part of the award, which report suggests was the reason behind his actions.
We hope that the couple, who has two children aged eight and two, will be able to work things out.
