There’s nothing quite like badminton that brings Malaysians together (besides football... when we're winning). Who else remembers watching Datuk Lee Chong Wei as he battled it out for Olympic gold against Chen Long with bated breath? Many of us — probably gathered at some Mamak shop somewhere — shed tears at a match that was considered to be Malaysia’s best hope for a gold medal at the games.

While parents may have frowned upon having a professional career in sports back in the day, Datuk Lee and current favourite Lee Zii Jia have shown how far national players can go, by bringing glory to the country and amassing numerous endorsement deals along the way.

National doubles champions Chan Chong Ming and Chew Choon Eng were once ranked the world’s number one pair in 2002. They clinched many medals together, including a bronze medal at the 2002 Asian Games and gold at the Commonwealth Games in the same year.

These two will be lending their talents and expertise to train youngsters at the upcoming Astro Kem Badminton.

Astro Kem Badminton is calling on all girls and boys aged 10 to 12 years old sign up for the once in a lifetime opportunity to be trained by the two coaches in hopes of molding them into becoming the next international badminton champion.

Astro Kasih continues to champion education through sports by organising the Astro Kem Badminton. This is in hopes that more children will hone their badminton skills and have the opportunity to train with professional coaches. They will also have the chance to meet their badminton idols in the final camp during the year end.

To date, 500 young shuttlers have flocked to the camps in Johor and Penang. Astro Kasih anticipates that even more will show up for the upcoming camp in Kuala Lumpur. Pre-registration slots are already fully-booked, but walk-ins are still welcome.
