TLDR

  • The new MyKad, featuring enhanced security elements such as a QR code for digital verification, will be fully implemented starting this June.
  • It is not mandatory to replace your old MyKad if it is still in good condition, except in cases of damage, mandatory updates, or loss/theft of the MyKad.
  • MyKad replacements can be done at JPN branches, UTC centres, or through the online portal for simple cases such as card damage.

Starting this June, a new and improved MyKad is set to be fully implemented. Some of the upgrades include a QR code for faster digital verification.

According to Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, the improvements will also extend to passports as part of efforts to enhance the security of national identification documents.

He added that the implementation reflects the ministry’s commitment to ensuring a more efficient system capable of addressing issues and public complaints related to identity management.

So, does that mean you need to change your IC this June?

The answer is no. It is not mandatory to replace your old MyKad with the new and improved version, as long as the old one is still in good condition.

In a Facebook post, the Ministry of Home Affairs stated that Malaysians do not need to rush to government offices to replace their MyKad.

However, Malaysians do need to replace their MyKad under the following circumstances:

1. Damage or physical degradation

2. Mandatory updates

  • Parents must replace their child’s MyKad (issued at age 12) once they turn 18 to update their photograph.
  • A MyKad issued at age 18 must be renewed by age 25 to avoid penalties.
  • If you move, change your name, or change your religion, you must update your MyKad.

3. Loss or theft

If your MyKad is lost or stolen, you must file a police report before applying for a replacement. Note that fees apply for this category, and repeated losses will result in higher charges.

MyKad renewals or replacements can be done at any National Registration Department (JPN) branch or any UTC branch nationwide.

Additionally, you can apply for a replacement through the JPN online portal. However, online replacement is only available for straightforward cases, such as a damaged card, and does not include updates like a new photograph.
