A passion project
Two students from a local university became the latest Malaysians to make the country proud by producing a winning documentary film.According to a report by Malay Mail, the film titled ‘Red Wine Chicken’ was recently chosen as one of the five winning documentaries by the Visual Documentary Project (VDP) 2020 in Japan.
The short documentary was produced and directed by Angel Yuen Yi Qian and Chung Lay Woei, both students from the Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR).
The 16-minute documentary, which was shot in early 2020 with the help of local production company Just Another Production, tells the story of a Vietnamese bride, Ah Jiao, who is married to a Malaysian man.
The character Ah Jiao is apparently inspired by Yuen’s aunt, who is skilled at cooking red wine chicken.
“When Ah Jiao gave birth to her first child in 2009, I remember my grandmother prepared her red wine chicken daily during the confinement.
“For me, Ah Jiao became a family from the day she married my uncle,” Yuen was quoted as saying.
Chung told Malay Mail that she decided to shoot the documentary with Yuen because she was attracted to the story.
Well, we are glad they did, because despite the strong competition, 'Red Wine Chicken' managed to beat out 1,066 submissions from nearly 120 entries from Southeast Asian countries to make the top five.
