A Malaysian-born barrister has made the country proud by being appointed as a Queen’s Counsel, which is the highest rank that can be awarded to barristers.

According to a report in News Straits Times, Ng Jern-Fei’s appointment has placed him in the  top 10 per cent of the United Kingdom’s 17,000 barristers.

Youngest person to receive such honour

Not only that, the 38-year-old is the youngest person to be appointed as a Queen’s Counsel, said the report.

With the appointment, Ng has become the third Malaysian to have “taken silk” for the appointment after the late K.S. Nathan and Eason Rajah.

“I never imagined that someone with my background could one day end up practicing law in England, much less be appointed as QC. However, I have been fortunate enough to have had the support of my family, clients and colleagues over the years, without whom none of this would have been possible,” Ng was quoted as saying.

Ng studied in SMK La Salle Petaling Jaya, did his A-levels at Cambridge Tutors College in Croydon and did his BA Hons in Law at Trinity College, University of Cambridge in 1998.

He is currently practicing at Essex Court Chambers.

Ng was quoted in The China Daily as saying that the key ingredients to his success were “determination, hard work, and never letting the orthodox view hold you back”.

Way to go!
