Malaysian Diver Qualifies For Tokyo Olympics By Winning Asian Cup Title

With local badminton hero Dato' Lee Chong Wei retiring from the sport earlier this year, it's sad to say that our chances of winning a gold at the Olympic Games are slimmer because he came closest to winning the elusive medal.

But, there's still a glimmer of hope, because a young Malaysian diver has just qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics!

Nur Dhabitah Sabri clinched a spot in the Olympic Games after she won the gold medal in the women's 3m springboard individual event at the Asian Diving Cup 2019 on Sunday (8 September), The Star Online reported.

The 20-year-old amassed a total of 313.85 points to clinch first place in the five-round event.

It was a double celebration for Malaysia, as fellow Malaysian Loh Zhiayi came in second with 223.45 points, while Indonesia's Linadini Yasmin collected 191.30 points to win the bronze medal.

Despite winning the gold medal, Nur Dhabitah told the news portal that she's not satisfied with her performance at the competition, and she vowed to "get back to basic" during training.

With the individual event in the bag, Nur Dhabitah said she's now eyeing another Olympic slot in the women's 3m springboard synchronised with her partner Wendy Ng Yan Yee.

Next year's Tokyo Olympics will be the young diver's second showing at the world's greatest sporting event, with her debut coming in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Let's all cross our fingers that Nur Dhabitah will bring home the country's first ever gold medal at next year's Olympic Games.
