Malaysian Embassy Staff In Pyongyang Are Safe
Malaysians attached with the embassy in Pyongyang, North Korea are reportedly safe, according to an official.
The official told The Star Online that Wisma Putra managed to get in touch with them on Tuesday and reportedly advised them to continue with their work as usual.
“We have communicated with our staff and are in touch with them. They have been advised to lead their lives normally,” the official was quoted as saying.
The news portal reported that there are 11 Malaysians who were left stranded in Pyongyang - three officials from Wisma Putra, six of their family members as well as two volunteers for the World Food Programme - after news broke earlier Tuesday that Malaysians in North Korea are banned from leaving the country until the issue regarding Kim Jong-Nam's death has been resolved.
According to a Chinese media report, which was cited by The Star Online in a separate article, “emergency procedures” commenced soon after North Korea made the announcement at around 6pm on Monday.
The Malaysian workers at the embassy were allegedly seen burning documents and loading luggage into vehicles moments after Ambassador Mohamad Nizan Mohamad was expelled from the country.
According to the report, the Jalur Gemilang in the embassy compound were lowered to half-mast on Tuesday morning.
