2019 has been an awesome year for Malaysian students.
We've had one who became the youngest student to enroll into Ireland’s Royal College Of Surgeons, a 11-year-old who recently won a NASA challenge and one who received the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences’ Engineering Honor Marshal award.
And just before 2019 comes to an end, a group of students managed to make the country proud.

Collecting medals

The prestigious 16th International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) 2019 recently took place in Doha, Qatar, and six Malaysian students managed to bring home one silver and five bronze medals.
The six students are Chin Jia Yao, Amelia Jade Mae-Xian Lim, Tay Yi Cong, Lai Bo Wei, Imran Adham Azmin and Haris Dani Erwin Dani.
Meet the winning teenagers. According to a report by The Star Online, Chin and Amelia, were the best students chosen from two preliminary rounds – the Kancil Science Competition (KSC) and the Malaysian Junior Science Olympiad (MyJSO).
Chin won the silver medal while Amelia won the bronze.
The other four bronze medallists are all aged 15.
The IJSO, a competition organised by Qatar’s Ministry of Education and Higher Education in collaboration with Qatar University, saw the participation of 409 secondary school students from 70 countries.
It is among 12 commonly recognised International Science Olympiads and the only Science Olympiad that covers Biology, Chemistry and Physics in one examination.
The younglings hard at work. During the IJSO, which aims to promote and reward the pursuit of excellence in scientific endeavour and stimulate gifted students to further develop their talents in Natural Sciences, the participants went through 12 hours of assessment.
The participants were required to answer 30 multiple-choice questions, a theoretical test and a practical (experiment) test.
Last year, only one out of six Malaysian representatives won the IJSO.
Good job, boys and girls! Enjoy your victory.
