Malaysians Are Disappointed That The First Day Of Parliament Was A Complete Circus
14 July marks the first day of Parliament ever since the Movement Control Order (MC)) took place (not counting the 'silent' 18 May assembly).
A few events unfolded throughout the sitting, which had the rakyat sighing and shaking their heads in disbelief, as it was a complete circus.
What is happening?
One of the main highlights was when former Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof was booted out and replaced with former Election Commission chairman Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun following a slim margin in voting. But what caught the attention of netizens was a clip of Syed Saddiq being rudely interrupted on numerous occasions and other MPs were openly shouting at each other aimlessly.Kau tengok lah bila orang muda nak berbahas betul-betul. @SyedSaddiq kena ejek, buat lawak bodo, kena perli dengan orang-orang tua yang jadi ahli Dewan.Apa masalah orang-orang tua ni tak boleh bahas betul-betul ni? Gaji mahal rakyat bayar ni.Bagi orang muda jaga negara la. pic.twitter.com/lAv8NDqf1P— luq (@luqmanlong) July 13, 2020
To add salt to injury, Baling MP Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim openly threw racist and sexist remarks towards Batu Kawan MP Kasthuriraani Patto.
He told her that “Gelap, tak nampak” (it’s too dark, we cannot see) and “Pakailah bedak” (put some makeup on) when she was speaking.
This frenzy triggered all sorts of backlash from the younger generation, residents of Baling, and Malaysians in general.here's the video pic.twitter.com/EkYXT2Z9Si— S T E K (@stphnbd) July 13, 2020
Many Malaysians were upset and embarrassed that they had to witness such incidents on the very first day of the parliament sitting:
On behalf of Rakyat Baling, we're so sorry because our MP has slurs MP of Batu Kawan.Honestly, his words doesn't represents Rakyat Baling. We're not the supporter of racism, we against colourism. We believe he should apologize.#RakyatBalingAgainstRacismPlease tag her here. https://t.co/Rz1zCKsdaI— Amitaduan (@ameersyazwaann) July 13, 2020
Mr PM @MuhyiddinYassin today your MP from Baling uttered a sexist & racist remark to me about my skin colour.Your MP blatantly insulted me & every woman of colour with his disgusting remark. He said,"Gelap, tak nampak"."Pakailah bedak".What is your stand in this?— Kasthuri Patto (@KasthuriPatto) July 13, 2020
Dear young Malaysians,Do not ever forget what happened in the dewan rakyat today, what our leaders did and how much they have disrespect all of us thinking politics is a joke.We shall be better than this, we will lead the country better #MasaKita— #blacklivesmatter (@alupratha) July 13, 2020
Syed Saddiq is not anyone's junior in that chamber. He is their PEER. A fellow MP.Yet, everyone treats him like he's an unwelcome nephew. This is the uphill task facing youth representation in politics. And the reason why it's absolutely essential.— Rohan Javet Beg (@RohanBeg) July 13, 2020
The level of disrespect towards Syed Saddiq in Parlimen shows how youths are being treated and looked down upon. Susah sangat kah mau tutup mulut skjap ja and listen to what he has to say? Ni pula sebelum mula bercakap suda kena ejek— Ok Sokmo (@ShaanGom) July 13, 2020
The way Syed Saddiq was mocked & belittled in the parliament is a proof of how the views and opinions of the youth are often left unheard and neglected by the boomer generation. Let the youth take over and carry Malaysia to a better place.— Wan Afifi Zawawie (@afifizawawie) July 13, 2020
other than Syed Saddiq, there was another politican jugak who got insulted. she's an indian. she was asking a question and this one politician said "gelap sangat tak nampak". he kept on making excuses to cover up his mistake and messed up by saying "pakai la bedak".— S T E K (@stphnbd) July 13, 2020
Benda macam sarkas dalam parlimen ni bukan benda baru ya rakan-rakan.Sejak zaman pemerintahan BN, PH, PN, serupa sahaja semua.Kerajaan dan pembangkang sama naik.Jadi tak usahlah beria konon satu belah sahaja yang badut ?Worst of all? We voted these guys ?— Asyraf Badhrul (@asyrafbadhrul) July 13, 2020
Petition to rename Parliament of Malaysia to Circus of Malaysia. From Dewan Rakyat to Dewan Clowns— Typical Malaysian (@TypicalMsian) July 13, 2020
Give me @ParlimenDigital any time over the circus I saw today. @ParlimenDigital MPs had so much dignity and took their roles seriously. Take a bow and now watch how you should NOT behave.— Ambiga Sreenevasan (@Ambiga_S) July 13, 2020
aku penat la tengok orang-orang tua yang jaga malaysia ni— freyr (@sunfloweraidil) July 13, 2020
Parlimen Malaysia, WE ARE WATCHING & WE ARE TAKING NOTES. We are absolutely disgusted.— Melinda Anne (@melannehere) July 13, 2020
Sidang dewan yang cukup memalukan. Dah ada kuasa lupa walaupun sekecil kecil adab. Ahli parlimen yang tidak ada isi ni cukuplah digelar badut tua. Kasi bungkus next PRU15— Jais (@wakjai30) July 13, 2020
We hope that our MPs would do better in the next sitting and have a professional debate amongst each other.Boomer politicians:Orang muda belum matang untuk berpolitik. Also boomer politicians in parliament:"Wehhhhhh""Boooooo""Wowowowowo""Pakai bedakk la"— Kyopropaganda. (@ABGKYO) July 14, 2020
