By now, everyone knows that the lockdown or Full Movement Control Order (FMCO) has been extended for two more weeks.

Most of the SOPs remain the same but looks like there's an update for those using public transportation, particularly taxis and e-hailing vehicles.

Three's a crowd

The Star reported that only two people can travel in a taxi or e-hailing vehicle now - a driver and a passenger.

Previously, three people were allowed in a vehicle; a driver and two passengers.

On top of that, the new ruling applies to larger vehicles such as vans as well as smaller vehicles.

The announcement was made by Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

"Please refer to the latest standard operating procedure (SOP) by the National Security Council (NSC)," he was quoted as saying.

Exceptions to the rule

While the new rule applies to most people, there are exceptions.

If you're going for a doctor's appointment or get vaccinated, up to two passengers are allowed to travel in a vehicle. You can also do so for security reasons, although the report does not specify what "security reasons" mean.

Is it if you have to accompany a child or an elderly person? Or if you are going somewhere you feel unsafe? Although why anyone would do so especially during a pandemic is beyond us.

If you're a taxi driver, don't forget to get travel approvals from Transport Ministry's Logistics Industry Information System (SMILE).

E-hailing vehicle drivers can use letters issued to their respective e-hailing operators.

If you're using public transport to cross state or district borders (with valid reasons, of course) the onus is on you to get the necessary approvals.
