The election not only made headlines around the world, it also set new records: it was the first time the former opposition party, Pakatan Harapan had won the elections and Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad not only became the oldest elected leader in the world, he’s the only Malaysian to hold the Prime Minister post twice.

13 Cabinet ministers, led by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, were sworn in on Monday before the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V at Istana Negara.

Now that we have a concrete set of Cabinet ministers (although the full line-up is still incomplete), some of them have also set new records following their appointments.

Let’s take a look at three of these record-breaking ministers:

#1 Gobind Singh Deo

The Puchong Member of Parliament (MP) is the son of the late Karpal Singh and isn’t a rookie in the political arena. He’s been an MP ever since he was elected in 2008. He made history after becoming the first Sikh to be appointed a federal minister.

According to Asia Samachar, he is also the first Sikh minister in Asia (other than in India, of course).

#2 Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin

It’s been a whirlwind political journey for our former deputy prime minister after he was shockingly booted out from Barisan Nasional’s cabinet back in 2015. He then joined forces with Tun Dr Mahathir to form Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia.

2018 is definitely his year as not only was he selected as a cabinet minister again, he’s also the only minister who have worked under Tun Dr Mahathir in two different parties: Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan.

#3 Datuk Seri Dr. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail

This inspirational lady needs no further introduction, because almost everyone knows what record she set: she became Malaysia’s first ever female Deputy Prime Minister.

No one would have thought that she would be working side by side Tun Dr Mahathir after what happened in 1998. Guess times have changed for the better.

She truly is a female empowerment icon and may all the girl power in the world grace her throughout her time in the office.
