According to a report by Astro Awani, the RM3.5mil Masjid Al-Ghazali, located in Jalan Depo, Petra Jaya, Sarawak, is very meaningful to the family of the victims.
The mosque, which can accommodate up to 450 pilgrims, features a modern Islamic design equipped with a women's prayer hall, ablution hall, toilet block, office room and parking space.
The opening date of the mosque is also symbolic as the tragedy itself took place on 17 July 2014, the 19th day of fasting that year.
In the tragic incident, victims Tambi Jiee, his wife, Ariza Ghazalee, and their four children, Muhammad Afif, Muhammad Afzal, Marsha Azmeena and Muhammad Afruz from Sarawak were killed after the plane was shot down while flying over the Ukrainian-Russian border.
