M’sian Content Creator’s Home Goes Up in Flames After Powerbank Explodes

Through several TikTok Videos, Amad related his story, saying that his power bank exploded, and the flames spread to the curtains. Before Amad could pour water on the curtains, black fumes had already filled the room. He managed to save his handphone to call the bomba, who arrived at the scene quickly. Thankfully, there were no injuries to him or his family members.

The incident happened around 1:30 am and destroyed his studio, which he uses for content creation. The fire also reduced around RM18-20K worth of electronic goods to ashes.

“I could only watch. Everything is gone,” he wrote in a video. His two-storey house could be seen burning in flames, with his car being parked downstairs. He explained that he couldn’t drive out of his car as his car key and spare key were upstairs where the fire was. Thankfully, his vehicle wasn’t burnt.

The day after the fire, Amad showed the horrific extent of the damage. His roof was burnt and collapsed onto the floor below. He also took a video of his studio showing that his gaming chair, PC, and air conditioner were all destroyed. However, there was some hope for gadgets on the opposite side of the wall. Pitifully, Amad’s hands were shaking as he pointed to the items.

He then walked over to his bedroom, where the fire started. His mattress was incinerated where only its springs could be seen. Several smartphones, including a Samsung Z Flip 6, Honor Magic V3, and an LG phone, were also charred.

He ended his video by saying that his house was inhabitable and he didn’t even know what to repair first.

How to prevent it

According to the Consumer Product Safety Office, certain steps can be taken to ensure that your power bank is safe for use and even storage.

• Buy from a trusted source, especially one that is certified by SIRIM,
• Keep your power bank in a cool and dry place away from the heat,
• Always inspect the power bank and refrain from using it if leakage, strange odours, colour changes, deformation, or any unusual occurrences are detected.
• To avoid short circuits, keep your power bank away from metal objects such as coins, paper clips, and keys.
