M'sian Couple Jailed for Stealing 54 Donation Boxes From Eateries in Melaka and Johor
A husband and wife had been sentenced to 12 months in jail after pleading guilty to charges of stealing and being in possession of 54 stolen charity boxes.
According to FMT, Nuruddin Hasbullah Zainal, 33, and his wife, Syaidatul Nor Syahidra Firdaus, 35, were caught in a raid at a condominium in Klebang, Melaka.
Besides the donation boxes, the police also found a transparent plastic packet containing compressed green leaves, allegedly marijuana, weighing about eight grams.
Melaka Tengah police chief Christopher Patit said they believed the couple earned at least RM250 daily over the past two years from stealing donation boxes.
These donation boxes belonged to madrasahs and orphanages placed at eateries around Melaka and Johor.
“The couple used to go to these eateries and pretend to be representatives from the madrasahs, pondoks or orphanages to collect donation boxes,” Christopher said.
The offences were charged under Section 29(1) of the Minor Offences Act 1995 and read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of one year in prison, a fine of up to RM1,000, or both, upon conviction.
