M'sian Influencer Fined RM500 After Video of Him Throwing a T-Shirt into Melaka River Goes Viral
What was meant to be content for social media posting landed a Malaysian influencer in hot water after he not only received heavy criticism from the public but also was fined RM500 by the Melaka Historical City Council (MBMB).
In a viral video on TikTok, the influencer, who was also a business owner, was showing the difference between his T-shirt and a counterfeit product that was bought online.

He explained that the original product has a very different fabric and printing quality, as well as different font sizes that were used.
At the end of the video, the influencer expressed his anger by throwing the counterfeit product into the Melaka River and considered it ‘garbage’.
Needless to say, his action had triggered many Malaysians who believed his action had polluted the iconic river.
One user said, “Bro, please throw the t-shirt inside a garbage bin and not in the river. Please keep the river clean.”

“Seriously? You just throw it in the river? Please don't anger Melaka people,” commented a user.

He has since retrieved the T-shirt
In another video, the influencer had filmed himself and his staff retrieving the T-shirt that had been thrown. However, he was still fined by the authorities for the act.
In a report by Malaysia Gazette, Melaka Mayor Datuk Shadan Othman said the authorities took the matter seriously, even though it was intended as social media content.
“Even though the T-shirt has been retrieved, there should have been another way to express anger,” he said.

After a visit to the influencer's premises located at the Stadthuys Building, MBMB had issued a Notice of Offence under Section 47(1)(a) of the Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974.
“It is an offence to throw away clothes or rubbish in a public place, namely a river, and you can be fined RM500.”
