M’sian Man Treats Colleagues After Promotion, Ends Up with RM3,000 Bill After They Order Pricey Wagyu

Facebook user Zainuddin Omar wrote a lengthy post to educate other users. He shared that one of his friends was promoted from grade 54 to Jusa C (a term in the public sector referring to State Director, Section Director, Section Secretary, or Office Secretary).

The public worker was the only one amongst his friends in his batch who was promoted, as the rest were still in grade 54. When one gets a promotion, close friends typically pester the person to buy them a meal at a restaurant.

Finally, the public worker was ‘forced’ to bring six of his close friends to a famous steak restaurant. When the menu arrived, some didn’t choose the type of steak based on their preferences but chose by looking at which dish was most expensive instead.

Zainuddin wrote, “Without any shame, four of them ordered a Wagyu steak priced at RM600 because someone else was paying. Two other friends were too shy and only ordered a RM60 steak.” It seems like only two out of six had any sense and courtesy!

When the bill arrived, the public worker was forced to fork out a mind-blowing sum of RM3,000 (the equivalent of some folk’s monthly paychecks) because he got ‘slaughtered’ by his friends. The man’s initial budget was only RM200 to RM300.

The man complained to Zainuddin that his ‘friends’ were heartless in doing so because they were jealous that he was promoted first. To him, RM3,000 for a casual meal was a huge waste.

“I have faced a similar situation when treating my friends to a meal at the nasi kandar shop Line Clear. The person chose the biggest prawn and a mega squid while I only ate a roast chicken. For those who haven’t dined at a nasi kandar joint before, the prawn and squid are usually the most expensive items there," he said

“I was taken aback when I paid for his meal. It’s not about being stingy but about being prudent with spending.”

Zainuddin added, “The moral of the story is to be ethical and polite; don’t take advantage of mild-mannered friends.” He also advised his followers to order wisely when a friend treats them and not to take advantage of their generosity.

His followers also chimed in with their thoughts, saying, “I faced this situation before. I had one dish. They ordered two dishes and a side dish…and even ordered a drink. Not only that, they even called friends who weren’t there. Aduhai. There were a total of seven people, I think. I meant well, but I ended up being dissatisfied.”

Another wrote, “My family members always say, if someone is paying, choose the cheap option. Don’t burden the one who is paying. They are sincere but they may end up being insincere and aggrieved.”
