M'sian Shares How He Was Scammed of RM5K by Rental House Agent, Turns Out She's Also a Victim
Cases involving scammers are on the rise these days. One Malaysian found himself in this unfortunate circumstance and was scammed RM5,000 for a rental unit that’s actually an Airbnb unit.
In a posting on X, a man shared a new scam tactic involving a fake rental unit that turns out to be an Airbnb. He shared that the fake agent would bring the potential client for viewing. Once an agreement was signed and the necessary fees were paid, these agents would disappear.
The post was also shared on Facebook, with a clear photo of the fake agent and the location of the supposed rental unit in Razak City Residence, Salak Selatan, Kuala Lumpur.
The ‘fake agent’ has explained the real situation
In a twist of events, the ‘fake agent’ decided to step up and explain the real situation.
In the Facebook comments section, the woman, known only as Sha, said she was also a victim of the scam. She added that she was working as a part-time property agent and had received a job offer from a man.
“I admit I did bring this man and other clients to view the home, but I didn't know it was a scam. I was only a part-time worker that was tasked with showing the clients the unit and informing them about the details of the unit. Other than that, I would tell the clients to contact the owner directly,” she explained.
In a follow-up comment, Sha said she had lodged a police report in hope of clearing her name.
“I have lodged a police report regarding this posting that has tarnished my name. Like I've stated previously, I'm only a part-time property agent and was tasked with only bringing clients to view the rental unit. I deny everything that has been said about me, and I would take further action against those who had spread my personal information.”
