- Netizens suggested that she bring the damaged banknotes to Bank Negara Malaysia or a bank branch to see if they could be exchanged, provided the serial numbers are still visible.
- Others also shared similar experiences, including one user who reportedly lost RM10,000 in savings after termites ate away the portion of the banknotes containing the serial numbers.
We’ve all been told to set aside some money for a rainy day. Having a small emergency fund can offer peace of mind when unexpected expenses arise. But for one Malaysian woman, her savings ended up disappearing in a way she never saw coming.
Sharing her experience on Threads, the woman posted photos showing several RM20 notes riddled with holes and partially destroyed. The culprit behind the damage? Termites.

According to her post, she had stashed around RM2,000 in cash under a cupboard. Unfortunately, the hidden savings became an unexpected feast for the pests.
"I don't know whether I should be angry or laugh."
Netizens suggest bringing the notes to Bank Negara
In the comments section, many users advised the woman to bring the damaged notes to Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) or a bank branch to see if they could be exchanged.
However, several pointed out that the notes' serial numbers must still be visible for any replacement claim to be considered.
"Just go to the bank and tell them you want to replace your damaged notes. They'll assess them, and if it's a small amount, they may be able to replace them on the spot. But for larger amounts, it's better to bring them to Bank Negara."
Another user added, "If the serial number and the picture of the Agong are still intact, the notes can be replaced. As for the others, most banks would not accept them."

Meanwhile, another commenter shared a similar experience involving a family member.
"My dad lost RM10,000 in savings because of termites. They ate the parts with the serial numbers, so there wasn't much we could do," they shared.
