Netizens Furious After Politicians Try To ‘Hijack’ The #BenderaPutih Movement Started By Rakyat

Malaysians woke up on Tuesday (29 June) morning to the thoughtful story behind the #BenderaPutih (white flag) movement, which was championed by kind-hearted netizens.

The objective of the movement was to help those who are in need or in financial distress to reach out without having to feel ashamed by hanging a white flag in front of their house.

The thought behind the movement was a noble one, but some people saw this as an opportunity to ride the wave and the plight of struggling Malaysians.

From the rakyat to the rakyat

Minister of Housing & Local Government Zuraida Kamaruddin caused quite a stir on social media earlier on Tuesday when she tweeted about the #BenderaPutih movement and repeated what was said about giving help.

She also added that “we cannot afford to see and grief over photos and videos of our friends who committed suicide”.

This caused an outrage amongst netizens, who felt that she was ‘hijacking’ the rakyat’s effort in helping one another:

Politicising the movement

Amanah Youth Chief Shazni Munir was also called out by netizens for trying to politicise and propagate the hashtag by encouraging others to also wave a white flag to oppose the current government on its failures to run the country, be in solidarity with the ones who are affected, and as an appreciation to the royal family.

These recommendations seems unnecessary as it will not only get people confused but also take the focus away from the real issue.

Surely, within a matter of minutes, both Zuraida and Shazni, as well as several other politicians, received the wrath of netizens.

We hope the politicians can see that this hashtag was created by the people and for the people due to the lack of accountability and responsibility on their part.

Let’s all do our part and check on each other to get through these trying times.
