It's not everyday a new sport gets added into a national-level sports meet, but when it does, you bet it involves a weapon.
The Star Online reported that the sport of silambam will be introduced at the Sukan Malaysia 2020 (SUKMA 2020).
In case you're wondering what that is, silambam is a weapon-based Indian martial art from Tamil Nadu, but also traditionally practiced by the Tamil community in Sri Lanka and Malaysia.
Fighting with sticks. The news portal, quoting a report by Malaysia Nanban, said the inclusion of silambam in Sukma 2020 is a great opportunity for associations and exponents to work together to make it a success.
Persatuan Silambam Malaysia deputy president R.T. Uthayakumar told the news portal that silambam was first introduced in SUKMA 2007 as a showcase, and it went on to be included as a competitive sport in two subsequent SUKMA events.
However, the sports was left out after that.
Just beat it. This time around, the sport is given another opportunity to shine following efforts by the Persatuan Silambam Malaysia and the endorsement given by Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq and Johor state exco members Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali and Dr S. Ramakrishnan.
SUKMA 2020 is set to take place in Johor between 11 to 19 July 2020, and if you want to see how silambam looks like in person, remember to head on over to the event.
