NGO Calls for Ban on Late Night Bus Travel Following Tragic UPSI Crash
Following the devastating bus accident on Jalan Gerik-Jeli that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students, the Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) has called on the government to ban late-night bus travel.

In a report, the consumer watchdog said the incident highlighted the growing dangers of nighttime travel involving heavy vehicles and urged the government to take action before more lives are lost.
Additionally, CAP stated that a Royal Commission of Inquiry should be established to investigate the rising number of serious accidents involving heavy vehicles such as buses and lorries.
According to the association, in just the first 10 months of 2024 alone, 825 fatal accidents involving lorries were recorded.

CAP President Mohideen Abdul Kadeer said late-night bus travel increases the risk of accidents due to driver fatigue.
“Falling asleep at the wheel could lead to catastrophic consequences. To combat this fatigue, some drivers may resort to using unregulated stimulants to stay alert, which could impair their judgment while driving."
"As such, we urge the authorities to ban late-night bus travel and commit to enforcing stricter safety measures,” he added.
