No More Free Tolls on Festive Occasions Starting This Year!
As the new year unfolds, drivers across the country will need to adjust to a significant change in their travel plans because the government has just announced that starting this year, highway toll exemptions for festivities will no longer be offered.

In line with the government's move towards implementing targeted subsidies, the Works Minister, Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, said the decision was made because the cabinet decided a more targeted approach should be used instead.
“According to the decision, there will be no more free tolls. This also applies to the upcoming Chinese New Year next week,” he said, as reported by the New Straits Times.
He also added that an announcement would be made if any considerations were made. As for now, 2024 marked the final year for toll-free holidays.
“The government has also realigned subsidies to adopt a more targeted approach for Malaysians. The details will be announced soon.”

For the record, last year alone, Berita Harian reported the government has spent a total of RM80.07 million on toll exemptions during Hari Raya Aidilfitri, RM42.31 million during Deepavali, RM41.21 million during Chinese New Year and RM38 million during Christmas.
