Good news (we hope)! The Immigration Department will introduce online application for new passports and renewals as early as September, Immigration director-general Datuk Mustafar Ali said via Astro Awani.

"We will introduce the system 100 per cent this September to make it easier for the people," he told the news outlet. The online system is expected to lessen the long queues that recently happened due to reports online claiming that the process may take up to six months.

Because of such reports, he said that the department had been receiving a drastic spike in the number of new applications and renewals. Limited stocks of the passports had also worsen the situation.

Social media has been abuzz with complaints of long queues at immigration offices, and some even arrive to line up before sunrise.

#rant how on earth did the national registry system go down for a week and cause such a queue for #passports!? There are hundreds more people queuing inside the building. The last time I was here they said "sorry we ran out of passports". Can this country stop being so ridiculous? Please and thank -fudging- you!

Hopefully in a few weeks' time, there will be improvements to the system.
