We've all been there (especially when you went to an all-boys school): you would do outrageous things just to impress a girl.

But nothing you did (we certainly hope so!) would beat what this man just did.

A daring escape

A man from Penang has landed himself in hot water after he stole a police patrol car just to impress his girlfriend.

According to The New Straits Times, the daring incident happened on Saturday (24 October) night.

The man and his brother, aged 32 and 28 respectively, allegedly drove away with the 1.8S Honda Civic patrol vehicle (MPV) parked inside the compound of the Seberang Prai Utara district police headquarters.

Claiming to be from the information technology resources unit, the officer on duty had allowed both men to enter the vehicle to check on its dashcam.

The elder brother then removed the key for the MPV from the rack and reportedly drove off with the patrol car, leaving a laptop behind.

The supervising officer only noticed something was amiss when the suspect did not return with the car after 30 minutes.

After trying to contact the vehicle through a walkie-talkie but to no avail, the police proceeded to track the vehicle down.

The police managed to track down the patrol car early Sunday (25 October) morning - in Shah Alam, about 370km away from the Seberang Prai Utara police headquarters.

The police managed to arrest the elder brother and his girlfriend, who were still in the vehicle.

Following the arrest of the couple, the police also managed to pick up the man's younger brother in Tasek Gelugor.

According to the report, the suspect confessed later that he had stolen the MPV to impress his girlfriend, who is in her 20s.

The man had reportedly picked up his girlfriend and tried to rob a sundry shop nearby before taking a joy ride to Shah Alam.

After an initial probe, the police found that the brothers have numerous previous criminal record and are hardcore drug addicts. In fact, the elder brother had been detained by the police on 15 October for electric cable theft.

The elder brother had also been diagnosed with mental illness.

Seberang Prai Utara district police chief Assistant Commissioner Noorzainy Mohd Noor told New Straits Times that an investigation is underway, and the suspects will be charged under Section 379A (theft of motor vehicle) and Section 170 (impersonating a police officer).

What a wild ride, kan? Let this be a lesson to all of you out there who wants to impress your bae: don't go overboard.
