Those who are fans of the board game Monopoly may be familiar with places on the board such as Park Place and Boardwalk, the two most coveted properties. However, soon, Malaysians could be landing on popular landmarks in the Pearl of the Orient such as the Kek Lok Si Temple and Komtar. This October, the fast-dealing property trading game will launch its first-ever Penang edition.

In 2021, local lifestyle brand dUCk became the first Malaysian brand to have its own Monopoly board game. The state will be the first in Malaysia to appear on the board game. The upcoming Penang edition will feature unique landmarks in the state such as cultural attractions, local businesses, and iconic places.

Under the official license of Hasbro, Winning Moves UK, a UK-based games company will be creating the Penang edition. Penang Global Tourism will be involved in the making of the game as well to make sure the best landmarks and popular sites are included.

The public can also be included in the creation of the board with suggestions and proposals for their favourite spots. Speaking during a press conference at The TOP Komtar, Winning Moves UK Representative Jennifer Lau said, “We would love to hear about your favourite places in Penang, your memories, must-see places, and your thoughts on what makes Penang so special. From street markets to viewpoints to museums and everything in between, we are looking forward to creating a beautiful portrayal of what locals and visitors love about Penang.”

State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin also expressed his excitement about the board game, saying that it would be a fun way to showcase what the state has to offer such as its UNESCO-designated sites.

A selection committee will be responsible for finalising suggestions and proposals from the public.

We personally think they should have bowls of cendol and Char Koay Teow as tokens and include landmarks like the Penang Bridge and ‘Kids on Bicycle’ mural on Armenian Street!

You can post your suggestions on the Penang Monopoly Facebook Page or email [email protected].

We hope that we’ll find this game under our Christmas tree this holiday season!
