Ask any Penangite about Pulau Jerejak, they’ll tell you that it’s a small island located nearby Queensbay Mall and the Penang Bridge.

The island was once popular for its rich culture as it was formerly used as a maximum-security prison in the 60s and decades later, it was home to the Jerejak Resort & Spa.

A few years ago, the island was mysteriously closed down, and no formal announcement was made regarding its closure, according to this report by The Star.

Now, it seems that the island will come back to life once again.

The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has given the green light to demolish existing building structures on Pulau Jerejak to make way for development on the island.

The 362ha island will have world-class resorts and residences such as condominiums, service-residences, and villas.

Not only that, visitors can soon travel the island by land as a bridge will be built directly from Penang to the island.

However, no cars will be allowed to the island; only electric-powered vehicles and bicycles can be used on Pulau Jerejak.

So, Penangites, are you excited for the re-opening of Pulau Jerejak?
