In The Philippines, You Have To Plant 10 Trees Before You Can Graduate

In Malaysia, you must pass all your papers in order to graduate from high school or college.

However, in the Philippines, all graduating high school and college students have to plant at least 10 trees each before they can graduate.

That’s not a joke.

According to a report by the Independent UK, a new Filipino law formalises the planting of trees upon graduation as compulsory, a move aimed at tackling global climate change.

Quoting the Philippines’ Magdalo Party representative Gary Alejano, upon implementation, the law will ensure that at least 175 million new trees would be planted each year and no less than 525 billion trees in a generation.

That's a lot of trees!

“Even with a survival rate of only 10 per cent, this would mean an additional 525 million trees would be available for the youth to enjoy, when they assume the mantle of leadership in the future.” he was quoted as saying.

The trees will reportedly be planted in mangroves, existing forests, some protected areas, military ranges, abandoned mining sites and selected urban areas.
