A recent incident involving a response made by Pos Malaysia CEO Charles Brewer over a torn work uniform had landed the CEO under heavy scrutiny by Malaysians. Many are concerned and upset over his reply that are deemed “unprofessional”.

In case some of you aren't fully informed of the fiasco, it all began from a posting on X showing a conversation that took place within an internal application specifically for Pos Malaysia staff.

In the chat, a worker had posted a photo showing a huge tear on his uniform's sleeve. He was also asking for a replacement and added that customers had noticed the tear and commented about it.

However, instead of expressing empathy or providing a solution, Brewer gave a shocking response:

“Count yourself lucky that you don't work for one of the foreign carriers who don't provide uniforms at all.”

It's obvious to say that Brewer's response caught the worker by surprise, and he even took it upon himself to say that he brought up the issue, as he had received comments about it from customers. He also asked whether it was wrong for him to raise the question at all.

Following the outcry from Malaysians, Pos Malaysia had released a statement acknowledging the incident and expressing their regret.

“Charles Brewer, our Group Chief Executive Officer, has conveyed his apologies to the staff involved and extends his apologies to anyone who may be affected or offended by his comment.

He acknowledged that he should have responded with greater empathy and committed to continuing to foster a respectful and supportive work environment for all Pos Wiras.”

Pos Malaysia Union defends Charles Brewer

In other related news, the Union of Pos Malaysia Uniformed Staff (UPUS) and its branches in Sabah and Sarawak had come to Charles Brewer's defence, saying he didn't mean to insult anyone.

In a joint statement, the union said Brewer's comments had been misunderstood and were not intended to belittle the staff.

“We clarified the issue with Mr Charles Brewer a day after it went viral. He explained that it was a misunderstanding and has since acknowledged his mistake. The union urges that this matter not be further sensationalised to avoid misinterpretation of his intentions,” the statement said.

The same statement also stated that throughout Brewer's career, he remained committed to his work and praised him for maintaining a strong relationship with staff and union members. He's also frequently engaging in on-the-ground issues to address workplace problems.

In regard to the delayed uniform supply, the union also explained in the statement that it was due to ongoing quality improvements.

As an interim measure, Pos Malaysia will be distributing the company jerseys to the affected members, in coordination with the union.
