We spew insults at strangers, abuse people due to their religion and race, rape, kill, and the horrendous list goes on.
One of the worst things that human beings do, however, is to cause pain or kill innocent animals.
One such case happened in India recently involving a pregnant elephant.
A group of villagers (in an attempt to allegedly protect their crops and home) fed the elephant an explosive-laden fruit.
According to AFP, the pregnant elephant willingly ate the fruit - said to be a pineapple - and it exploded in her mouth, causing severe injuries.
The injured animal then wandered around in pain, unable to eat and eventually ended up in a river closeby.
Photos of the elephant shared on social media showed her standing in a river after the incident, dunking her mouth and trunk in the water for hours before she died.
An unforgivable act
Thousands have since come out to voice outrage on social media after forestry officer Mohan Krishnan shared photos and a heartfelt message about the incident on Facebook."She didn't harm a single human being even when she ran in searing pain in the streets of the village."
"She didn't crush a single home. This is why I said, she is full of goodness." he wrote.
The perpetrators must pay
According to Reuters, a criminal investigation is currently being carried out following the elephant's death.“We only know that the injury (to the elephant) was caused by some explosive substance,” said forestry official Sunil Kumar.
If found guilty, those responsible could face animal cruelty charges that will include fines and even a jail term.
Meanwhile, enraged by the incident and hoping to spread more awareness, artwork on the elephant and her cub has been popping up all over social media.
Not an uncommon occurance
While this particular incident has gotten everyone riled up, it is not someting unusual in India.
A similar incident took place just last month involving another female elephant that was found with serious injuries to her mouth.
That elephant also died.
Due to rampant deforestation, the elephant-human conflict seems to be escalating in India.
Government statistics state that between 2014 to 2019, some 2,361 people were killed following attacks by elephants.
During the same period, 510 elephants died - 333 were due to electrocution, and the remaining died due to poaching and poisoning.
Whatever it is, we humans have to understand that we share this earth with all creatures, great and small.
If we keep cutting down trees and removing large parts of the natural habitat of thousands and thousands of animals, we cannot expect them to just stay within that small plot of land and just remain there.
We have to find a way to live together peacefully and living together does not mean heartlessly killing the animals.
Shame on us for destroying their home. Shame on us for killing them. Shame on us for being so selfish!
