Price Of Coffee And Tea At Kopitiams May Increase By Up To 60 Sen By January 2022
If you're a true Malaysian, then you would agree that some of the best coffees can be found at your favourite classic kopitiam joints.
Well, you need to enjoy them as much as you can before the turn of the new year.
Kopitiams in trouble
According to a report by Malaysian Insight, Malaysians can expect an increase in prices of coffee and tea at kopitiams beginning next year.Quoting Malaysia Singapore Coffee Shop Proprietors General Association president Wong Teu Hoon, the price increase can be attributed to the rising operating costs.
Wong predicted that the average price hike will be between 20 sen to 60 sen, depending on which part of Malaysia you're in.
“The price will increase 20-30 sen in rural areas and 40-60 sen in urban areas.
“The rent is higher in certain areas so the prices will also higher,” he was quoted saying.

The price hike is necessary to help kopitiam operators to manage their rising operating costs, Wong added.
“Recently, many things have become more expensive — from condensed milk and evaporated milk needed to make coffee or tea, to the salaries of employees, rent and cooking gas,” Wong told the news portal.
In addition to that, Wong claimed that kopitiam owners would not profit much from the price hike, as they would earn only RM20 per 100 cups of coffee sold if prices were to go up 20 sen.
“That amount is not enough to pay the salaries of foreign workers. At most, it is only a subsidy,” he said, adding that the salary of a foreign worker has risen to RM1,650 per month from RM1,200 previously.
However, despite the price increase, we would still be frequenting our favourite kopitiam because hey, a good cuppa coffee is hard to find, right?
