Sabah is one of the most beautiful places in Malaysia. Not only it is full of culture but it also has an abundance of exotic beaches and getaways.
Naturally, hundreds and thousands of tourists from all over the world and Malaysia flock to this “Land Below the Wind” to appreciate its beauty.
And because of this, the Sabah government has decided to increase the entrance fees for all parks to address overcrowding concerns, as reported in the New Straits Times.
The new charges will be increased to RM5 from RM3 for locals and RM20 from RM10 for foreigners and will come to full effect by next year.
It is estimated that about 450,000 tourists have visited the Taman Tunku Abdul Rahman marine parks last year.
Sabah Parks Director Dr. Jamili Nais says that they are currently looking into ways to divert visitors to other islands in the state to help maintain and conserve the parks.
Apart from those concerns, Sabah is facing other challenges such as collecting rubbish that’s drifting to other islands and providing clean water supply.
We know the increase is for a good cause – to control the number of tourists, but hey, perhaps its best you pay a visit to Sabah this year before the price hike.
In the meantime, if you’re thinking of an island vacation, we've listed down a few exotic Malaysian islands you’ve probably never heard of to help you plan your next adventure.
