This time, a Sabahan wowed the fashion world with his design at an international competition.
Traditional meets modern
The New Straits Times reported that Ahmad Fikri Gompul, from Kampung Kiadawan Kiulu, won over the judges at the International Borneo Fest 2019 with his Rungus traditional costume-inspired design.
As a result, he won third place at the competition held in St John Church, Hyde Park, London.
According to the report, the Fashion Design student from Universiti Teknologi Mara created his design by combining the traditional woven fabric with corduroy (denim) and chiffon material for a ready-to-wear outfit.
The 31-year-old told the daily that it took him two weeks to complete his work.
“The competition was based on the concept of producing modern clothing using patterns and colours from traditional ethnic costumes in Sabah and Sarawak.
“This casual dress is suitable for all ages and promotes the culture of Sabah.
“I hope this effort will inspire other local fashion designers to come out with designs that appeal to the younger generation, while ensuring traditional clothes stay relevant despite the rapid changes,” he was quoted as saying.
Well done, Ahmad Fikri! Go and wow the world with your fashion.
